King of the (R18+) Kids

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

As the issue of R18+ ‘adults only’ games currently up for public debate in Oz (see http://www.theage.com.au/news/articles/

), it was interesting to read that renowned horror writer Stephen King was weighing into the debate in the US via his Entertainment Weekly column. In response to a plan by the state of Massachusetts to ban the sale of violent games to anyone aged under 18, King suggested that such a move would be undemocratic.

While openly admitting he’s not a fanboy, King wrote:
“What makes me crazy is when politicians take it upon themselves to play surrogate parents. The results of that are usually disastrous. Not to mention undemocratic”. King added that the issue of censorship resides with parents taking control and monitoring their kids lives, understanding and caring about their media habits, behavior, and peer group.
